- 40.1% of LLM citations point to Reddit, the #1 domain per Semrush
- Our 1,000-run study: Perplexity cites Reddit in 44.7% of sourced shopping answers, first source in 23.5%
- ChatGPT's rate is volatile: from roughly 60% to 10% of answers in six weeks of Semrush tracking
- An engine on a web index without Reddit access cited Reddit 0 times in 500 answers
Reddit is the most-cited domain in AI answers: 40.1% of LLM citations point to reddit.com, ahead of Wikipedia at 26.3% and YouTube at 23.5%, per Semrush's analysis of 150,000+ citations (Semrush). For the ChatGPT product specifically, the rate moves a lot: Semrush tracked ChatGPT citing Reddit in roughly 60% of answers in early August 2025, then closer to 10% by mid-September.
Our own data adds a direct, current measurement from the engine next door. In our 1,000-run study of AI shopping searches, Perplexity cited Reddit in 44.7% of its sourced answers and listed it as the very first source in 23.5% of them (full study and methodology).
So the honest one-line answer: depending on the engine, the month, and the query type, Reddit appears in somewhere between roughly 1 in 10 and 1 in 2 AI answers, and no other domain gets cited more across LLMs overall. Here's how that breaks down, number by number.
The headline numbers at a glance
Six datapoints, five independent datasets:
- 40.1% of LLM citations point to Reddit, the #1 domain overall (Semrush, 150,000+ citations across 5,000 keywords)
- ChatGPT's Reddit citation rate swung from roughly 60% to 10% of answers within six weeks of Semrush's 2025 tracking
- 99% of ChatGPT's Reddit citations point to individual discussion threads, not subreddit homepages or brand pages (Profound)
- Reddit ranks #1 on Perplexity (6.6% of all citations) and #1 on Google AI Overviews (2.2%) in Profound's 680 million citation dataset; Wikipedia leads on ChatGPT at 7.8%
- Our study: Perplexity cited Reddit in 44.7% of sourced shopping answers, at an average position of 2.26 in the source list
- Our control: the same model family on a web index without Reddit access cited Reddit 0 times in 500 answers
Different methodologies, one direction. Whatever engine your buyers use, Reddit is either the top source behind their answers or close to it.
What our 1,000-run study found
We generated 500 unique buying prompts across 20 product categories, "best CRM for a small team" style queries, and sent each one to two engines: Perplexity Sonar and GPT-4o mini wired to an independent web index (Exa). 1,000 runs, zero failures, every cited domain counted.
The Perplexity side is the direct measurement:
- Reddit appeared in 219 of 490 sourced answers: 44.7%
- It was the first source listed in 23.5% of answers
- When cited, it averaged position 2.26 in the source list and landed in the top 3 sources 175 times
- Only YouTube got cited more often, in 64.3% of answers
The control engine is the part most people miss. Same prompts, same day, same model family, but running on an index that cannot crawl Reddit: 0 Reddit citations in 500 answers.
With Reddit in the index: 219 citations at an average position of 2.26. Without Reddit in the index: zero, in 500 attempts. Access decides the outcome, not content quality.
The full category table, domain rankings, and prompt templates are in the complete study.
ChatGPT vs Perplexity: what we measured, and what we didn't
Straight answer: our study measured Perplexity directly, not the ChatGPT product. The second engine used a GPT model on a third-party index with no Reddit deal, precisely because ChatGPT itself has read Reddit through an official licensing agreement since May 2024, and we wanted to isolate index access as the variable.
For ChatGPT the product, the best available numbers are third-party:
- Semrush's tracking: roughly 60% of answers citing Reddit in early August 2025, near 10% by mid-September
- Profound: Wikipedia is ChatGPT's most-cited domain at 7.8%, and 99% of ChatGPT's Reddit citations are unique threads with a median age of about one year
- 5W Research: Wikipedia and Reddit together drive over 25% of ChatGPT citations in the US, while WSJ, NYT, and Bloomberg miss the top 20 (PR Newswire)
Because ChatGPT reads Reddit through the OpenAI deal, its citation behavior sits far closer to our Perplexity column than to our zero column. The mechanics of that deal, and why they make Reddit structurally favored, are covered in why ChatGPT cites Reddit so often.
The categories where Reddit gets cited most
Citation rates are category-dependent. The top of our 20-category Perplexity table:
| Category | Reddit cited (Perplexity) |
|---|---|
| Budgeting apps | 56.5% |
| Web hosting | 56.0% |
| Laptops | 56.0% |
| Robot vacuums | 56.0% |
| Skincare | 56.0% |
| Standing desks | 56.0% |
The pattern: categories where trust drives the purchase, budgeting apps, skincare, hosting, lean hardest on Reddit, because nobody believes the vendor's own landing page. And the floor still matters. The lowest category in our data, headphones at 24.0%, still pulls Reddit into roughly one sourced answer in four.
Why the number keeps moving
Two forces pull in opposite directions. Volatility first: Semrush watched ChatGPT's Reddit rate collapse from roughly 60% to 10% in six weeks, so any single snapshot ages fast. Then the trend: Reddit's share of AI citations in commercial, buying-intent categories grew 73% between October 2025 and January 2026 (Tinuiti × Profound, via CMSWire).
Model updates, index refreshes, and licensing negotiations all move the needle. That's why we're turning our study into a monthly series: the identical 500 prompts, the identical engines, re-run every month with the deltas published. To be clear about what exists today: one full 1,000-run snapshot, not a continuous tracking history yet. Each monthly edition adds one comparable data point, and the trend line builds from there.
What to do with these numbers
If people research your category before buying, a meaningful share of the AI answers they read is assembled from Reddit threads. Three moves:
- Check where you stand today. Run your brand through our free AI visibility checker and see whether AI engines mention you, and which sources they pull from instead.
- Understand the mechanism. Why ChatGPT cites Reddit breaks down the licensing deals and which kinds of threads get cited.
- Track the numbers over time. Our Reddit AI search statistics hub keeps 20 sourced stats current, alongside this study's monthly re-runs.
Getting cited is not a paid placement, that's the entire point. The 99% figure means citations go to threads, so presence in the right conversations is the only lever. That's the exact loop Readyt is built around: find the threads AI engines cite in your category, contribute properly, measure the mentions.
FAQ
How often does ChatGPT cite Reddit?
There is no single stable number, and anyone quoting one without a date is guessing. Semrush's tracking showed ChatGPT citing Reddit in roughly 60% of answers in early August 2025 and closer to 10% by mid-September. Across LLM answers overall, Reddit is the most-cited domain at 40.1% of citations, and Profound found 99% of ChatGPT's Reddit citations point to individual threads.
Does ChatGPT cite Reddit more than any other website?
Not on every count. In Profound's 680 million citation dataset, Wikipedia leads on ChatGPT at 7.8% of citations, and 5W Research found Wikipedia and Reddit together drive over 25% of US ChatGPT citations. Blended across LLMs, though, Reddit is the #1 cited domain at 40.1% per Semrush. Either way, it is the top community source by a wide margin.
How often does Perplexity cite Reddit?
In our 1,000-run study, Perplexity Sonar cited Reddit in 44.7% of sourced shopping answers, made it the first source in 23.5%, and placed it at position 2.26 on average. Only YouTube appeared more often. The full study has the per-category breakdown across 20 product verticals.
How current are these numbers?
The third-party studies date from 2025 and 2026. Our own study is one full 1,000-run snapshot so far, and we're re-running the identical 500 prompts monthly, so the proprietary numbers on this page will refresh with each edition. The statistics hub tracking the third-party numbers is refreshed quarterly, after each major citation study and each Reddit earnings report.
